Its been a few years since Qualcomm introduced its last major Fast Charging technology, Quick Charge 4 (which also has an advanced version, Quick Charge 4+). Qualcomm finally came up with its latest fast charging technology, Quick Charge 5. The Quick Charge 5 technology supports more than 100W charging capabilities, while its predecessor Quick Charge 4+ supported 45W power.
Quick Charge 5 is the company’s biggest leap yet — at least where sheer charging speed is concerned. Qualcomm claims Quick Charge 5 can charge a device with a 4,500mAh battery from 0 to 50 percent in just five minutes or fully charge a phone in 15 minutes. The company also says that Quick Charge 5 is up to 70 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 4, up to 4 times faster at charging, while still running 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the old version.
Quick Charge 5 also supports 2S battery systems for two battery cells wired in series, which doubles the charging voltage and helps in increasing the charging speeds.
Quick Charge 5 uses Qualcomm’s Battery Saver and Smart Identification of Adapter which helps to extend battery life cycles. The new technology also enables dual and triple charge technology and works with adaptive input voltage to protect the battery while offering faster charging.
“We work closely with manufacturers to create industry-leading devices that meet consumers’ demand for more immersive and accessible mobile experiences,” said Ev Roach, VP Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, in a statement.
When Will See Quick Charge 5 Phones in Market?
Many flagship owners would be happy to know that the Snapdragon 865 and 865+ already supports the Quick Charge 5 technology. Initially, all the next-gen premium and high-tier snapdragon processors will come with the Quick Charge 5 support. However, Qualcomm would enable its presence on devices based on Snapdragon 700-series and earlier generations in the future.
Qualcomm is currently testing the new Quick Charge 5, so we can expect the smartphones launching in Q3 2020 may come with Quick Charge 5 support.
