Xiaomi Enters The Android TV Market With Their 1080P ‘Mi TV Stick’

Xiaomi has unveiled the new Mi TV Stick in its Global Ecosystem Product Launch event in Europe which held on 15th July. Similar to Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, the recently unveiled Mi TV Stick is a portable streaming device that connects to a television via an HDMI port.

The Mi TV Stick users will be able to stream all the movies and shows from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Hotstar+, and more. The Mi TV Stick can be controlled using a Bluetooth remote control which ships with the Stick.

Mi TV Stick: Specs and Features

The newly launched Mi TV Stick looks similar to any other streaming device available for purchase. The Mi TV Stick comes with a classy dual-tone black finish,  with an HDMI 2.0 port up-top which will be used to connect the Mi TV Stick to your TV. You simply need to plug it into an HDMI port, switch to that input source, and you are ready to go. Your dumb TV is now a smart TV.

Xiaomi’s new portable streaming device is powered by a quad-core Cortex-A53 processor clocked at up to 2.0GHz, an ARM Mali-450 GPU, 1GB RAM, and 8GB eMMC storage. Mi TV Stick runs Android TV OS 9.0 and comes pre-installed with the Play Store and popular streaming apps, including YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, and more.

Even though it has all those extra capabilities, the Mi TV Stick also has the latest Chromecast technology. So, that means you can use the Mi TV Stick to cast content from your devices to a bigger screen, just like the much more simple Chromecast. The Mi TV Stick supports both DTS and Dolby audio compression technologies.

The Mi TV Stick also comes with a Bluetooth 4.2 remote that can be used to give the Mi TV Stick voice commands using a dedicated Google Assistant button. The remote also has dedicated buttons to access Netflix and Amazon Prime app instantly.

Mi TV Stick will allow users to stream content only up to 1080p resolution, which is a bit disappointing. We expected the Mi TV Stick to be launched as a 4K HDR dongle but there’s a possibility that the company might explore launching the same in the future.

Price and Availability

The Mi TV Stick has been priced at €39.99 (approx $45) in Europe. The Mi TV Stick will compete with the popular streaming devices such as Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku streaming stick, simply by undercutting them on the price front. The company has not revealed any details about the launch of the Mi TV Stick in other markets at the event but we can expect the Mi TV Stick to arrive in other markets in the coming days.
