The 12-inch MacBook to be the first with Apple’s ARM CPU

According to reports, the 12-inch Macbook is returning with the company’s new ARM-based CPU. Apple announced the launch of the upcoming Mac devices with in-house silicon chips in WWDC 2020.

According to some rumors coming from the TSMC’s supply chain, The 12-inch Macbook will be the first Mac device to come with Apple’s new in-house ARM-based Chip. The last MacBook 12-inch model got the low powered Intel Y-series processors which would now be replaced with the new and significantly more powerful in-house ARM-based Chips.

Previously, Ming-Chi Kuo reported that wither the 13 or the 24-inch iMacs will be the first Macs to get the new in-house ARM-based chips. Supposedly, the new report comes straight from the TSMC, which is the only supplier of Apple’s A-series chipsets. According to the reports, the TSMC has stopped making chips for Huawei which enables them to fulfill Apple needs.

“Industry sources pointed out that the first A14X processor designed by Apple has been finalized and will begin mass production using TSMC’s 5nm process before the end of the year.

Apple’s supply chain industry pointed out that by the end of this year, Apple is expected to launch a Macbook with a 12-inch Retina Display, using a self-developed and designed A14X processor. The processor has codenamed Tonga and supports a USB Type-C interface. It will weigh less than 1 kilogram.” reads the report.

It is also rumored that the upcoming A14 Bionic Chips from Apple, which will power the upcoming iPhone 12 series and also implemented into iPads as A14X Bionic could make its way to the 12-inch MacBook as well. This would help to elevate the performance of the Macbook and most importantly, it would result in drastic battery life. Apple promises something along the lines of 15 to 20 hours on a single charge.

Though the 12-inch Macbook is the first one to get the latest in-house ARM-based chips, we don’t think the MacBook Pro as well as the MacBook Air are getting it anytime soon.
