OpenAI Launches o3-pro: Its Most Powerful Reasoning Model Yet

OpenAI has rolled out a new model called o3-pro on ChatGPT, calling it their most powerful reasoning model to date.

The release comes after OpenAI introduced the original o3 model and o4-mini in April 2025. While o3-pro is based on the same core architecture as o3, it runs in a “high-compute mode”, which uses more processing power and takes extra time to solve complex tasks.

In simple terms, o3-pro is designed to solve tougher problems by leveraging deeper reasoning and greater computing resources—making it the most capable model available on ChatGPT right now.

Performance: How o3-pro Stacks Up

According to OpenAI, the new o3-pro model delivers better performance than the o3 model in several areas—especially in science, education, programming, data analysis, and writing. In internal testing, experts consistently preferred the outputs generated by o3-pro over those from o3.

Being a reasoning-focused model, o3-pro particularly shines in math, science, and coding. In recent benchmark tests, the results were impressive:

  • AIME 2024 (a high-level math test): 93%
  • GPQA Diamond (graduate-level science questions): 84%
  • Codeforces (competitive programming ranking): 2,748

These scores show that o3-pro outperformed the regular o3 model across the board, largely due to its high-compute mode, which allows it to take more time and processing power to think through complex problems.

One of the most exciting things about o3-pro is that it comes with access to multiple advanced tools inside ChatGPT. These include:

  • Web browsing
  • File analysis
  • Image and visual understanding
  • Python code interpreter
  • Memory capabilities

… and more. In other words, o3-pro isn’t just smarter—it’s also more versatile.

OpenAI is officially replacing the older o1-pro model with o3-pro in ChatGPT. The new model is currently being rolled out to ChatGPT Pro and Team subscribers. However, there’s a catch: ChatGPT Plus users won’t get access to this high-compute mode.

Starting next week, ChatGPT Enterprise and Education users will also get access to the o3-pro model. In addition to ChatGPT, o3-pro is now available through the OpenAI API—and the pricing has raised some eyebrows.

It’s priced at $20 per million input tokens and $80 per million output tokens. The model supports a context window of up to 200,000 tokens, allowing for deep and extended interactions. Its knowledge is current as of June 1, 2024.
